Hi everyone,

one of the projects we¢ve been working on during the past year has been nominated for the Digital Humanities Awards 2015. It¢s called the "TEI Processing Model Toolbox" (aka "The Instant Publishing Toolbox). Votes are accepted until Saturday 27 February, so if you like, please consider giving us your support on

http://dhawards.org/dhawards2015/voting/

The toolbox is quite a time saver: writing transformations for TEI can be cumbersome and often requires some thousand lines of XSLT or XQuery. The toolbox reduces this to a few dozen, media-agnostic processing rules, which work across HTML, FO, LaTeX and epub.

It also addresses a problem we often encounter in the academic world: people produce a huge amount of high-quality TEI, but then have a hard time to publish it. The app generator in the toolbox is there to help: based on a TEI ODD containing processing instructions, it generates a complete, stand alone application with browsing features, basic search and PDF/epub output.

A live version of the app is available on showcases:

http://showcases.exist-db.org/exist/apps/tei-simple/index.html

To see how it performs, try the "Early English Books" demo in the right sidebar, which contains 32852 books.

The app package (current version 1.0.1) is also available for local install via the dashboard. We¢re currently using the app in several projects, including one for a large international institution, so it will likely continue to develop rapidly during the next months. Since the processing model is not actually tied to TEI, we¢ll probably adopt it to other XML schemas as well.

Wolfgang
