Doesn't Java have an (unofficial?) way of doing this with the "jar:" protocol and an exclamation mark, viz. jar:http://www.example.com/mystuff.zip!/dir1/dir2/file1.xml I would have expected this to work "out of the box" in Java XProc implementations, just because it's part of the Java infrastructure.
