Abstract

This document is a guide to versioning XML languages using XML Schema
1.1. It shows many of the new Schema 1.1 mechanisms, provides context
above the schema 1.1 WD, and solicits reader input.

Status of this Document

This section describes the status of this document at the time of its
publication. Other documents may supersede this document. A list of
current W3C publications and the latest revision of this technical
report can be found in the W3C technical reports index at
http://www.w3.org/TR/.

This document is a Working Draft, published 27 September 2006, which
when complete is expected to become a W3C Working Group Note. It has
been developed by the W3C XML Schema Working Group, as part of the W3C
XML Activity, to illustrate the use of XML Schema 1.1 in defining XML
vocabularies with better support for later revision of those
vocabularies. The current draft is not complete, but it illustrates
several techniques important for the versioning of XML vocabularies
defined using XML Schema 1.1. It will be updated to make it more
complete and to reflect further technical changes in the development
of XML Schema 1.1. The Working Group has consensus that this draft
should be published, but does not necessarily have consensus on every
aspect of the exposition.

Please send comments on this document to the archived versioning
mailing list public-xml-versioning@w3.org (archive).

The English version of this specification is the only officially
maintained version. Information about translations of this document is
available at
http://www.w3.org/2003/03/Translations/byTechnology?
technology=xmlschema.

Publication as a Working Draft does not imply endorsement by the W3C
Membership. This is a draft document and may be updated, replaced or
obsoleted by other documents at any time. It is inappropriate to cite
this document as other than work in progress.

This document was produced by a group operating under the 5 February
2004 W3C Patent Policy. W3C maintains a public list of any patent
disclosures made in connection with the deliverables of the group;
that page also includes instructions for disclosing a patent. An
individual who has actual knowledge of a patent which the individual
believes contains Essential Claim(s) must disclose the information in
accordance with section 6 of the W3C Patent Policy.

3. A statement whether or not the group considers the document
to be a delta specification. This statement is only required for
documents expected to become normative Recommendations under the
       W3C Patent Policy.

This document is expected to become a Note, not a
       Recommendation.

4. Satisfaction of transition requirements

    a. Decision to publish

The Working Group decided to request publication of this
document during our telcon of 15 September 2006.

       http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Member/w3c-xml-schema-ig/2006Sep/
att-0037/2006-09-15telcon.html#item13

    b. Director's permission for short name

This transition request amounts to a request that the Director
agree to the shortname 'xmlschema-guide2versioning' for this
       document.

It would surprise me to learn that many other groups were vying
       for that particular short name.
