Indrajit Ray, Associate Professor from Colorado State University, invited by
the SMIS team for a six month period, will do a talk at INRIA-Paris
Rocquencourt on Thursday 4th Feb, 10h30.

"How Private Is Your Privacy and What Can You Do About It?"

Information is one of the most prized assets of modern day organizations.
Enterprises go to great extent to gather and share information about their
customers, including some very sensitive information. This often leads to
serious privacy violations, specially when the information is misused or
mishandled. Unfortunately, we the individuals  whose information are
affected in the process, are seldom aware of what information about
ourselves are gathered, what further information are mined from that
gathered, and how the information are used and potentially will be used.
Although, in many cases we do not have any options but to part with such
information, in many other cases, however, we can definitely take some
preventive measures to protect our privacy.

In this talk, we discuss some of the most common privacy threats that we are
faced with in this information age. We discuss what kinds of information
about ourselves are typically gathered, how they are gathered, and why we
should be concerned. We then discuss some technical solutions that are
available to us, the end users, to protect ourselves from violations to our
privacy.
