Dear Advisory Committee Representative,
Members of the Social Web XG,
I'm pleased to announce publication of:
A Standards-based, Open and Privacy-aware Social Web
http://www.w3.org/2005/Incubator/socialweb/XGR-socialweb-20101206/
Since April 2009, the Social Web Incubator Group studied the systems and
technologies that permit the description and identification of people,
groups, organizations, and user-generated content in extensible and
privacy-respecting ways, with a goal to propose a way forward for the W3C
to participate productively in the wider Social Web ecosystem.
In the report, the XG present a framework for understanding the Social Web
and many relevant standards (from both within and outside the W3C), and
conclude by proposing a strategy for making the Social Web a "first-class
citizen" of the Web.
In the wider Social Web community outside the W3C, one of the most
inspiring events was the beginning of a test-driven approach towards
creating a federated Social Web at the Federated Social Web Summit. You
will read in the XG report that while the W3C should not favor any one
particular technology or standard, at this stage the W3C should offer
resources to this grassroots effort by helping to start a Federated Social
Web Incubator Group. The report also recommends that the W3C host a
workshop to investigate identity in the browser with existing communities
in order to determine how digital identity fits into the One Web platform.

Congratulations to the XG. With this publication, the Social Web Incubator
Group is now closed.
