I got a reply from David Landwehr: "Well, the pull method was done by issuing a http get to a back-end. When it times out xforms-submit-error was dispatched which then issues a new get. If data was return, a chat message, then xforms-submit-done was dispatched and data inserted in the xml document. Then eventually a new submit was issued. So this was using <submit/> and not any tricks were needed."
