Optimization? Hum... on the wire it takes extre space (@mode=...), and the 
logic is:
if (put) { if (frag) { if (mode) } }
instead of
if (put) { if (frag) }
if (delete) { if (frag) }
...

So I don't see here where it can be an optimization.
