There is one aspect nobody has commented on yet. If this feature - 
heaven forbid - would be used *instead of* labels, or if the label would 
be moved into the input field, random characters typed by the user would 
destroy any explanation of a particular fields purpose.

E.g. <input placeholder="name"> is present on the page, but no other 
explanatory text. The user accidentally types in "qqqq". How will the 
user get the hint back? Deleting what has been typed and blurring the 
field. Good usability? I think not!
