I am not an expert on Firebug; it is possible that Firebug should be redesigned to avoid using this functionality. It is also possible that Firebug is inherently browser-specific (that is how I understand the expression "Safari equivalent"); nothing prevents Firefox from providing this functionality to Firebug as an extension.
