Personally, I would like to see the W3C embrace remote participation as the IETF has done. It does require some A/V planning and I do understand concerns about group dynamics. However, a lot of the issues have as their root continually declining travel budgets - not a trend likely to reverse anytime soon, and probably a force adding momentum to WebRTC deployment. As has been mentioned, W3C has WebEx so we can use that or another remote service such as Hangouts or JitsiMeet. The IETF has a contract with MeetEcho but W3C does not, so that is probably not an option.
