as discussed with dom and harald, go for a simpler directory layout 
and more explicit names. Also, two tests that where using old APIs, 
and which had been made redundant, have been deleted. Next step, 
**_curate the existing tests_**, possibly merge some, and add more IDL
 support in the existing tests. Then, check against specs to see which
 parts are no tested, and **_write new tests_**.
