This seems to come up at least once per year where someone asks me something about the lifetime because they want to do something assuming they exist and I have to say something like "weeeeell it will work but probably don't count on it" and I end up filing issues like this thinking it is safer to change the spec to what we want than to do a risky change with possible backwards compat issues in edge cases, so I file a spec issue, but then I go on about my life and forget about it, so this happened again a year later in #797.
