Element.id is a thing, postMessaging a string does exist. Web applications probably exchange Element.id strings (it should be easy to write a jsfiddle). Which API are you not clear about? Note that the word "probably" appears in a key location in your message. And you're probably right - about APIs that applications expose and consume.
