Ok, sounds like a plan. It's not immediately obvious how to go about adding such a change to the document, since everything else in the extensions doc either touches specific interfaces or is non-normative. Should we just add a section under overviews? Or perhaps it would be better to add a new major section for definitional changes like this? I'm interested in others' thoughts on this, open to suggestions. (I kinda wish the extensions doc was a set of actual (machine-readable) patches to the main doc; it seems like it would be much easier to maintain.
