@na-g knows the Firefox implementation best, so I'll leave it to him to answer the detail questions. One additional point I'd like to make, since we seem to be asking for tighter specification of this API: Firefox does not return timestamps in the future. That way, someone naively polling the (synchronous) API would receive information only later once playout time is *now*.
