I'd say the main objections are those [in point 4 above](https://github.com/w3c/webrtc-pc/issues/1945#issuecomment-420510604).

There are data channel uses of RTCPeerConnection that do not fundamentally¹ rely on camera or microphone. That's where they're similar to WebSockets.
