As far as I know Apple Pay in the Mac/iPhone "combo" uses Bluetooth to achieve an integrated and convenient payment solution. Although one can use Web Bluetooth this has major shortcomings and (probably) _requires the user to grant each Merchant access to the Bluetooth connector_. With a _dedicated interface_ this is not necessary since the Merchant never talks directly to Bluetooth channel (it isn't even aware of it).
