We went through similar conversations previously and landed on payer and payee. I have not heard anybody express confusion about the meaning of the terms, nor have I heard anybody say "I would have understood your API better had you used different terms." Therefore, like Adrian, I prefer we stick with payer and payee. As I mentioned previously, I think that it's fine to use another term in the intro (e.g., merchant / end user) to give people a few hooks for understanding the common use case.
