I would argue that both of you are probably not the typical user. We've seen nefarious software do all kinds of things to browsers that users don't understand that creates a worse and/or confusing experience. We then spend lots of time and money trying to correct it. There are all kinds of incentive structures that exist out there, and doing the right thing that is good for users is not necessarily the one that always wins.
