RE: Telcon minutes, fro Wed., April 10

Hello WG,

I've got some results to report on WOFF 2.0 compression gains collected over the whole collection of Monotype webfonts library (with roughly 33,400 TTF fonts being served currently). Here is what we see in the results:
Average compression gain (over GZIP): 25.04%
Median compression gain (over GZIP): 22.52%
Standard deviation in compression gains across the entire library: 9.17%
Max / Min gains: 94.51% / 1.12% (with six fonts out of 33,400 being considered outliers producing low single digits negative gains).

Overall, the results are very impressive, considering the number of fonts that produce spectacular results in 70%-90% gain range (which is the reason for average gains being pushed about 2.5% higher than median).

Thank you,
Vlad

   sergey, are you calling in?

discussion points: all members to review the reference code
implementation, attempt to produce statistics over a larger
   corpus of fonts

Next call goals: to review the results and compression gain
   ratios

font libraries to cover: Monotype web fonts, Adobe/Typekit,
   OFL,

JH: would like to see comparison of both TTF and CFF fonts,
   preferably the same typefaces
