Hello WebDX CG participants, Back in January and February, we've been converging on a roadmap for the group in 2024, based on initial draft prepared by Kadir. I've kept forgetting to circulate the result to the group since then... Here it is at last. Obviously, some of the activities mentioned in the roadmap are already underway! The CG continues to meet bi-weekly on Thursdays, now at 3PM UTC. Next call in an hour from now. CG participants involved in the web-features project also meet on the other Thursday at the same time to discuss web-features and baseline. Group calendar at: https://www.w3.org/groups/cg/webdx/calendar/ And with that said, here is the roadmap... Our charter defines two activities as core for WebDX: - Coordinating research efforts to better understand the major obstacles and gaps that developers face when using the Web, - Building a shared understanding and description of the existing interoperable surface of the Web Platform and its supporting infrastructure to help drive consistent communication on the features developers can build with confidence on, e.g., in projects that reference features of the Web Platform to converge on a common set of features. In 2023 we have started collaborating on shared research activities, in particular State of CSS, State of HTML, a high level developer satisfaction survey, and multiple short surveys on MDN. We have also launched the Web Features repo to group features in a hierarchy that is meaningful to developers and added availability information in the form of Baseline. In 2024 ===== To coordinate research efforts ----- - Continue providing research insights that are collaboratively conducted on the high level to identify broad developer pain points. - Conduct research that can be used for prioritization in the standardization process, e.g. missing features on the platform. These might be early signals that can be used to encourage WGs and CGs to focus their efforts or requested by them to improve their decision making. - Coordinate research that can be used for prioritization in the implementation process, i.e. features that are already standardized but not Baseline yet, in particular to provide the Interop 2025 process with reliable and valid data and insights to prioritize the implementation of features and fixing of existing features in 2025. To provide clarity ----- - Complete the mapping of the Web platform with Web Features to backfill existing features and maintain the Feature Set going forward as a shared effort with BCD. - Use Web Features to connect more available data, in particular WPT. - Review Baseline and adapt the definition and feature groups based on developer feedback - Provide developers with better data on feature availability on the platform to help them in their decision making, e.g making available better browser share data and data on browser uptakes. - Collaborate with the ecosystem to make this data part of developer workflows. - Coordinate our DevRel efforts to talk about Baseline features. Baseline 2023 features are features that are now available across all major browsers. This provides the opportunity to highlight them across browser vendors and give the platform a voice when it comes to devRel in addition to individual browsers and the features they ship. - Provide developers with ways to follow along with features that are not in Baseline yet. Thanks, François.
