After looking deep into this matter I have come to the conclusion that
whatever method you use, existing certificates stored in CryptoAPI, NSS, etc.
will not be accessible from JavaScript without exposing users to questions
and procedures they probably won't be able to cope with.

If this is correct (I don't claim to know everything), the work on "Secondary
Features" will be a bit more challenging than originally perceived.
