WebCGM WG -- The WebCGM TC has been looking since early summer at requirements for WebCGM "2+". The thinking seems to be stabilizing around a two-stage approach, with immediate user and vendor interest in the 2.1 stage: ** WebCGM 2.1: a quick project comprised mostly of a handful of relatively simple items that could be thought of as "WebCGM 2.0 leftovers". ** WebCGM 3.0: a collection of more substantial and potentially difficult new capabilities. Discussions have moved pretty quickly in the last week, and the relevant on-line documents will not be updated in time for the WG's 11-october (tomorrow) telecon. So here is my own up-to-the-minute summary (other WG+TC members, please comment if you think I have erred). Potential WebCGM 2.1 content: 1.) substring hotspots (enabled by ISO defect correction.) 2.) text search: no new functionality but 2.0 code examples/tutorial. 3.) regex APS addressing: via regex in 'apsid' and/or 'name'. 4.) more DOM/XCF Style Properties: pan-zoom, access to more line/edge-type attributes, fill attributes. 5.) transform as DOM/XCF Style Property and/or new APS Attribute. 6.) declarative animation: probably beyond 2.1, but there is persistent user interest (for a 3.0 project?) in a very small subset of declarative animation capabilities within or adjunct to WebCGM -- study to continue. 7.) font interchange: e.g., a font-substitution file (like the proprietary equivalents in many current viewers). 8.) default Styling Properties: something like a preferences file to supply specific defaults where such are lacking. 9.) z-compression: gzip compression of whole file as .cgmz. 10.) clarify interaction/prioritization of various transparency functionalities. 11.) get object extents: utility function for DOM programmers. 12.) redraw control: when DOM-specified changes happen (immediate, no-redraw, full-redraw, redraw-changed, etc.) For more information, you may consult this document [1], but be aware that it is NOT yet up-to-date with the latest email and telecon results. Be aware that this is a TC internal working document, so it doesn't look a lot like a typical requirements document.
