@jehrensvard are you saying that the current validation rule of ignoring the counter if the current value is 0 and the previous value is unset or 0 is fine? That then leaves the full 32bit unsigned in to be used as a time value or other non by 1 incrementing system, rather than treating all values with the high bit set as special as you previously speculated.
