@annevk do you have any thoughts on this issue? It was discussed in last week's WHATNOT and @alice's proposed changes were positively received but no Apple folks were present.

It's a long tricky thread but @alice's [first comment](https://github.com/WICG/webcomponents/issues/1098#issue-2975360163) is still a good summary of the problem and proposed solution.
