Added WPT coverage for this here: https://github.com/web-platform-tests/wpt/pull/52295. @alice please let me know if you disagree with any of the behavior suggested in those tests (aside from the question of the type forked into #1093). That WPT is now basically testing for the behavior suggested in https://github.com/WICG/webcomponents/issues/1089#issuecomment-2594204895.
