FWIW, I don't think "reference target" is any better in that regard. It's equally confusing because the confusion stems from the semantics of this new attribute, not from its name.

One thought. Focus delegation is delegation of focus. It's a delegation of an action
by user or script. Here, what we are delegating is the ID reference and it's a static/declarative relationship so perhaps there is some distinction we can make in that regard.
