This is actually a tricky problem to solve generally if you want to allow for asynchronous handling of the event as there could be multiple events happening in theory in which case you need some kind of attribution. I.e., the API needs to either take the event or the event instance needs to offer the API.

Alternatively I suppose we could allow for best effort and that in the case of multiple events a single notification within some time period is sufficient.
