It was not my intention to imply that selectors combinators would necessarily cross shadow boundaries, only that selectors would apply within an open-stylable shadow root, as if the stylesheet was imported into that shadow root. I intended the question about combinators crossing shadow roots only as an open question and a feature that may not be needed for most existing page-level sheets I'm trying to accommodate with this proposal.
