I don't think it's really possible to achieve the same level of separation of concerns without a separate DOM tree. On the other hand, maybe such a separation of concerns is not needed in most use cases where a single party tends to have control over everything? We really need to go back to the drawing board and understand the problem space better: what is it that people are trying to accomplish with open style shadow roots, and what are desirable properties of this new mechanism.
