@WebReflection This comment was addressed to the WhatWG members, not you personally.

1) you missed the part where I suggest targeting a *subset of children*
2) I'm providing context and examples of things that happen in the wild (using Mithril rather that React because I'm more fluent with it, but none of the algos are mine conceptually... The longest ordered subsequence comes from Boris Kaul's IVI, and the pioneering fragment support in Mithril is the work of Leo Horie).
3) This was meant as support for your call for a more generic API, and going a bit further re. versatility (see point 1).
