<span>#</span>2 and <span>#</span>3 seem to be the only solution for components that don't use shadow DOM. Today a component can set its default role / ARIA attributes in `ElementInternals` without using shadow DOM.

If <span>#</span>2 is the solution, then would it make sense to align with [cross-root ARIA delegation](https://github.com/leobalter/cross-root-aria-delegation), since the syntax is similar?
