Not everyone want to use JS for web development, including in the browser. Declarative alternatives such as XPath and XSLT have been standard for years and have definite advantages, both in theory and in practice.

Lets put it like it is: it's not the first time a monopolist browser vendor is sabotaging international web standards. What it needs is European Commission looking into practices like this.
