I was able to find [monochrome monitors](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monochrome_monitor), such as green text on black backgrounds. (Confusingly, monochrome monitors are specified as two colours - foreground and background.) I don't think that using single-color means that we are dumbing down the term. Many, many examples of monochrome are greyscale and black and white.
