And let me be clear this is not an easy thing to grasp. I don't blame developers for being confused about this.

I think possibly the legitimate case here is where it isn't a variation in detail, but actually a different concept at different *logical* sizes. For example, a company might just use the first letter of its brand name as the logo for "small" sized icons, but use the full word for "large" sized icons. The 64x64 version might be the full word whereas the 32x32x2 version might be a high-res (64x64) image of the first letter.

Still, I'd assume this is rare and my feeling is that you made the right decision to remove the density axis, and just use large size icons in place of high density.
