Ah right, non-Safari browsers basically do not parse non-special schemes at all. The standard aligned with Safari in https://github.com/whatwg/url/commit/b266a43fc9df0e8607074bd4d336a517e2010009 as it better matches the intent of URLs and the original RFCs. Closing this then. Thanks!
