Agreed. It's not so easy to infer CORS principles and howtos from the spec text.

We have exhaustive tests for Chromium at e.g. https://code.google.com/p/chromium/codesearch#chromium/src/third_party/WebKit/LayoutTests/http/tests/fetch/script-tests/thorough/cors-preflight.js which might be useful for writing examples.

IIRC, there was an open bug to draft a text to explain what "credentials" are. I couldn't find it now.
