I wonder how much this depends on the language? In German. Scandinavian, Spanish or Portuguese accents on letters, to me it would seem somewhat odd if the backspace key would just remove the accent but not the rest of the letter. I assume this is different in some other languages.

Or am I possibly misunderstanding you completely?
