If I might, and without sarcasm meant, the more I think about this `upgrade` part of the specs, the more I think it feels like "_quantum physics_" where it's not clear to consumers (users, developers) what a custom element is, or what it'll become. The DOM so far never worked this way, I'm not sure an intermediate state is a good addiction to these specs. Maybe it's easier for implementation purpose so that libraries on top are needed.
