Requesting access is less privileged than calling any of the powerful feature APIs (because it does not have the side-effect of spinning up geo, or the camera, etc). So, if anything, calling straight up geolocation.getCurrentPosition() or getUserMedia() seems like a much larger intrusion than .request().
