I'm afraid that exposing caret rect will make things worse for vertical writing mode (in Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian, etc...) as well as in bidirectional text where "split" caret appear at two points graphically to indicate two potential insertion points because most of web developers aren't familiar with those text writing modes.
