I agree with @teleclimber that half-styled words may exist in the wild. But, apparently, browsers in general don’t agree. Without contentEditable, Safari, Chrome and Firefox all report ‘Mexico’ and ‘Maus’ to VoiceOver as separate words. With contentEditable, they are spellchecked as a single word.
