[Bug 15418] sort out HTTP auth

You can do the whole dance yourself with a custom-generated Authorization
header. cross-origin HTTP authentication is not part of the existing feature
set and was explicitly excluded when we designed CORS. Let's not play games and
definitely not in this bug which is about figuring out what is actually
implemented :/
