Anyway, I am implementing the spec behavior in WebKit via https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171322. It does add a little complexity but the work is done. I just hope Blink does the same. View on GitHub: https://github.com/w3c/web-platform-tests/pull/5707#issuecomment-297820722
