See also the discussion in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1193394 -- the current spec setup assumes things about alert and company blocking the world that Firefox is NOT going to do in practice, and as a result there are serious issues with implementing the spec as it stands. There are open spec issues on it, but in practice the spec has punted on the problem, leaving it up to implementations to reconcile the conflicting requirements somehow.
