Minutes from MEIG TPAC meetings 25 / 27 September 2021

Dear all,

The minutes from the MEIG TPAC meetings are available:

https://www.w3.org/2021/10/25-me-minutes.html

https://www.w3.org/2021/10/27-me-minutes.html

Our first meeting heard from HbbTV and CTA WAVE, and discussed performance issues running browser based applications on TV devices. This identified some topics to follow up on:

* Timeliness of W3C spec developments and browser implementations for adoption into TV devices and TV industry standards

* Web specifications do not describe performance requirements. Would it help if they did? Which devices to benchmark against?

* CMAF support in MSE and Media Capabilities. Recommend revisiting this discussion with the Media Working Group

* Some device media playback implementations are incomplete or unreliable. What can W3C do to help improve this?

* TV application performance is a concern. Some companies are looking to alternatives to HTML and DOM, such as canvas and WebGL based rendering, to achieve adequate UI performance

* Can W3C help define development practices to achieve good UI performance?

* How are accessibility features supported through non HTML/DOM based user interfaces?

* TV applications run with limited memory. Would allowing applications greater control over memory usage (e.g., hint for image cache usage) help performance?

We'll discuss between MEIG and CTA WAVE chairs about following up these topics, details to be announced.

Our second meeting had two presentations: an update on Hybridcast from Tatsuya Sato (NHK), and an update on Media Timed Events and DataCue.

* Secure communication (HTTPS) between devices in a home network

* Timing accuracy of media-synchronized events

* Low latency distribution, e.g., CMAF over WebTransport

* Presenting content on IoT devices based on device characteristics

On media timed events:

* Work still to be done on defining MSE integration for DASH events

* Is there still industry interest in developing this feature?

Thanks,

Chris (for the MEIG co-chairs)
