Hi Mark, Sony is interesting in your suggestion because we also expected that the use case (3) would be addressed by Network Service Discovery API. I am going to comment for AC review. Let me clarify the issue ? I see that the user experience for the three use case is the same and the common API can address the three use cases . But there must be a difference from interoperability perspective. The use case (1) and (2) guarantee that a web application specified by an URL can be always launched on the second screen but the use case (3) does not because the URL is used just to identify a native application to be launched on the platform. Is this correct understanding ? Also, does the use case (3) have limited support by the CG due to the interoperability concern ? Or, is it just because the use case (3) is not attractive for the CG members. The use case (3) is attractive to Sony. We think the new WG should address the use case (3) if a common API can address it. We also think that it should not be limited to the use cases that an application presents on the second screen. For Web of Things , head-less devices, i.e. no screen device, should be addressed as well. For example, a web application controls an air conditioner or audio speakers. Fundamentally, what should be standardized is a common message passing API to another application on local or remote devices while underlying protocols of discovery and messaging are out of scope, I think. Thank you. -***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***---***--***---***---***- Tatsuya Igarashi (Tatsuya.Igarashi@jp.sony.com<mailto:Tatsuya.Igarashi@jp.sony.com>) Innovative Technology Development Div, System R&D Group Sony Corporation From: Mark Watson [mailto:watsonm@netflix.com] Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2014 5:11 AM To: public-web-and-tv IG Subject: Fwd: Proposed Charter: Second Screen Presentation Working Group (Call for Review) All, The AC review period for the proposed Second Screen Presentation Working Group has started. I thought members of this group might be interested in that work. The Community Group has discussed three use-cases for a web site rendering content on a second screen (e.g. a TV): (1) the second screen is a simple display panel connected over HDMI, Mirracast etc. (2) the second screen runs a full web User Agent (3) the second screen supports various native apps (e.g. YouTube, iPlayer, Netflix ...) In the first case, the device hosting the controlling (first screen) site also hosts a second UA and the output of this is rendered on the second screen. In all three cases a message passing API is provided for communication between the content on the two screens. At Netflix, we had previously looked at using the Network Services Discovery API to implement the third use-case. However, this API is not receiving attention from UA implementors for (valid) security reasons. Since the user experience for the three cases above is the same, it seems natural that all three should be addressed with a common API. The third use-case has attracted limited support in the CG, but I am hopeful that the wider W3C community - and this group in particular - would take the view that these use-cases should be addressed together. All three are in scope of the draft charter, although this could be more explicit. If you have an opinion on this issue, please let your AC rep know, as I expect it will come up during the discussion. ...Mark ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Coralie Mercier <coralie@w3.org<mailto:coralie@w3.org>> Date: Wed, Jul 30, 2014 at 8:23 AM Subject: Proposed Charter: Second Screen Presentation Working Group (Call for Review) To: w3c-ac-forum@w3.org<mailto:w3c-ac-forum@w3.org> Dear Advisory Committee Representative, This is a Call for Review of a proposed charter for the Second Screen Presentation Working Group: http://www.w3.org/2014/secondscreen/charter-draft.html The mission of the Second Screen Presentation Working Group is to provide specifications that enable web pages to use secondary screens to display web content.
