Last week i was at the Internet Identity Workshop as well as a Verifiable Claims Working Group meeting. i think i see some possible applications of blockchains & of verifiable credentials to Web advertising. (1) encrypted/secure ads.txt replacement with revoking. If an ad channel used a blockchain for storing credentials relating to who is authorized to run ads for a given organization, 1.a) the organization could revoke them at any time, and 1.b) the ad channel would effectively have a local cache of the information, so this might speed up ad fulfillment. (2) anonymnous tracking Is there any mileage in separating out the roles of comminication with the browser and of ad auctions? What if an ad channel used an opaque identifier to communicate with the organization hosting a preference database? I'm not sure how this can work if the organizations are the same or if they cheat :) but maybe it's worth exploring zero-knowledge proof technology here?
