[WCAG2ICT] Meeting minutes from 18 May

Hi all,

Here’s a link to the meeting minutes from today’s meeting: https://www.w3.org/2023/05/18-wcag2ict-minutes.html.

Quick summary:

  * We will need to keep working to complete the 3 remaining sections of content prior to publishing our first public review WCAG2ICT update. It will have consensed guidance for all WCAG 2.1 criteria. Hoping to complete content by end of June.
  * 1.4.10 Reflow was split into 4 aspects, each in its own issue (definition of CSS pixels, closed functionality software, non-web software, and non-web documentation.
  * Deeper dive into CSS pixel definition and what is needed for good interpretation in non-web contexts. The TF seemed to be in agreement that there should be a table showing some examples with calculations. However, it was noted that there’s still variances, such as viewing distance, that depend upon the context of use. In non-web contexts there are extreme examples, from watches to digital signage. We’ll first work on common use cases: Phone, Desktop display, display on the wall.

Actions: Group will do some research on optimal viewing distances of various technologies. During the meeting we found:

  * NIST study for self-service kiosks is between 18 and 36 inches. Other studies, e.g. by University of California Berkley had similar results.

Please add links and comments to Issue 162<https://github.com/w3c/wcag2ict/issues/162> of other research you’ve aware of regarding optimal viewing distances for various technologies.

Best regards,

Mary Jo Mueller
