Issue 6: Classification: Understanding WCAG Document, How to Meet SC 4.2.1-Intent of this SC [1], Editorial Comment Original Comment:"in the GL list Wendy posted the following explaination that I think would be good to add to the intent section to explain. John suggested an edit which is also included" Proposed Change:"WCAG 1.0 says "If you can't avoid building stairs, build an elevator." It doesn't say anything about making the elevator easy to find or get to. SC 4.2.1 of WCAG 2.0 says, "If you can't avoid building stairs, provide an elevator at the main entrance, along with the stairs." Recommended Response: May need some more discussion? Accept premise of proposed change, but should testability of "easy to obtain" be considered (or is this out of scope for this discussion)? NOTE: What is "easy" for some users may not be "easy" for others. In the elevator example, perhaps it would be good to provide "directions to the elevator" right at the main entrance, so that one could not avoid encountering these directions (in a variety of renditions to address particular accessibility needs) at the main entrance. Maybe should state "The elevator should be at least as close to the main entrance as the stairs are. Or, the elevator should be at least as "prominent" (noticeable?) to a user at the main entrance as the stairs are." The idea is that the accessible solution should be at least as prominent to a user as the nonaccessible solution, or is that going too far? Issue 19: Classification: WCAG 2.0 Draft, SC 2.4.2 [2], Technical Comment Original Comment:"Are there "processes" which are not "tasks" for purposes of this criterion? I can't think of anything that would qualify. If I perform an interaction in a user interface, surely I am performing, or undertaking, a task and the result of my doing so will be the result of the task performed. If this is right, then make the change proposed below." Proposed Change: "Change "process or task" to "task" or "task performed by the user"." Recommended Response: May need some more discussion? Definition of "process" (from Webster's New Riverside Dictionary) is: "a system of operations in producing something", or "a series of actions, changes, or functions that achieve an end or result" Definition of "process" (from [3]) is: "a series of actions, changes, or functions bringing about a result", or "a series of operations performed in the making or treatment of a product". Definition of "task" (from Webster's New Riverside Dictionary and from [4] - identical definitions) is: "a system of is: "a function to be performed; an objective" (also "a piece of work assigned or carried out (done) as part of one's duties", or "a difficult or tedious undertaking"?). NOTE that "function" (definition of "task") appears as a choice in a definition of "process" previous, so "task" might be considered a subset of "process"? Thus, from these definitions, "process" and "task" may seem different in scope? Or, more to the point, how specific do we want the applicability of this SC to be?
